Cam Pilley is the only Australian left in the squash singles draws at the Commonwealth Games.

Pilley, the men’s fifth seed, will face No.3 Peter Barker from England in the quarter-finals after beating Scot Greg Lobban on Thursday 11-6 11-4 11-6.

Ryan Cuskelly, Steve Finitsis, Rachael Grinham and Kasey Brown lost their round of 16 matches.

Finitsis made a great comeback before losing to Indian fourth seed Saurav Ghosal 11-2 11-5 4-11 6-11 11-6.

England’s Chris Simpson beat Ryan Cuskelly 11-6 9-11 11-5 11-7.

In women’s singles, Madeline Perry from Northern Ireland gained revenge on Australian Kasey Brown with an 11-4 10-12 11-6 11-5 win.

Brown knocked Perry out of the singles competition at the Delhi Games.

Brown will now focus on the mixed singles, where she and Pilley are the defending gold medallists.

“We’re looking forward to getting stuck in,” she said.

14CG5946Rachael Grinham was rueing a lost chance after going down to second seed Alison Waters of England 11-5 2-11 14-12 11-9.

“I should have taken the third, I was upset,” Grinham said.

“I took my foot off the gas a bit and played patiently, but you can’t do that when playing someone like Alison.

“She just keeps fighting back.”

14CG5533Pilley said he would need to do his homework if he is going to turn around a string of losses to Barker.

“When I saw I hadn’t got the first or second seed, I was very relieved because those two are a step above,” he said.

“That being said, he (Barker) has beaten me the last five or six times we have played so I will be doing some preparation tonight.”
